Adventureland was one of the original themed lands created for Disneyland, and from day one was an integral part of the Magic Kingdom plans. The concept was to provide guests with a romantic fantasy of exotic exploration. As a result, Adventureland is the most varied of all of the Disney “lands”, with inspiration provided by such disparate settings as Polynesia, Africa, the South Seas and Asia.

Magical Moments

  • As you enter Adventureland, listen carefully to the music as it transitions to a mesmerizing swirl of African percussion, exotic instruments and dizzying rhythms. Most guests don’t notice the change, but it’s the meticulous attention to this kind of detail (as well as the foliage, the lighting, and even the walkways) that makes the Magic Kingdom, well, magical!
  • The Crystal Palace Restaurant also helps to create a smooth transition from Main Street to Adventureland. The Victorian architecture fits in nicely with the Main Street Shops, and also evokes the Colonial-inspired visions of Africa and Asia.
  • Adventureland takes on a totally different feel after dark. The whole area becomes much more mysterious (and a bit spooky!). As you wander through the lush walkways you’ll feel like you’re journeying into the deepest and darkest depths of the jungle!/li>

Hidden Mickeys & Other Secrets

  • As you cross the bridge to Adventureland, look for four shields. At the top of the first shield on the left you should be able to find a Hidden Mickey.

Did You Know...?

  • Great care was taken in the landscaping of Adventureland. Imagineer Morgan (“Bill”) Evans was primarily responsible for the design. The variety of exotic plants in Adventureland includes the cape honeysuckle, the chinese hibiscus, Mexican flame vines, Brazilian bougainvillea, sword ferns, spider plants and Australian tree ferns.
  • Landscapers needed to bore through 14 inches of impervious clay to make the pits necessary to accommodate the root structures of the various trees. This is because the Adventureland area of the Magic Kingdom was constructed over an extensive landfill (created to raise and level the grade of the site).
  • One of the inspirations for Adventureland came from the True-Life Adventure series of documentary films created by Walt Disney.

Touring Tips

  • As you pass by the Swiss Family Treehouse, keep your eye out for a group of large tiki statues. But beware, these statues might give you a wet surprise if you’re not careful!
  • You’ll also find Shrunken Ned’s Junior Jungle Boats near the entrance to the Jungle Cruise. There you can pilot your own miniature boat via remote control (just be sure to save the piloting of the Jungle Cruise boats to your trusty guide).
