A rough and wild safari through rugged terrain is the centerpiece of this untamed land, but you’ll also find quiet pathways and an authentic African village to explore.

As you cross the bridge to Africa, you’ll enter the village of Harambe. A 40 foot baobab tree is the centerpiece of the village, and throughout the day musicians wander through the village, entertaining you with the exotic sounds and dizzying rhythms of African music.

Magical Moments

  • Africa is the most ruggedly themed of all the Animal Kingdom lands. As you enter the village of Harambe, you can imagine that you’re an exotic adventurer about to embark on a dangerous safari!
  • Tamu Tamu Refreshments (found on the right as you enter Africa), is a wonderful place to enjoy a refreshing snack. There’s an out-of-the-way seating area nearby where you can relax with some cool ice cream or a chilled smoothie.

Hidden Mickeys & Other Secrets

  • As you approach Tamu Tamu Refreshments, look on the ground to the right to find some pebbles around a manhole cover forming a Hidden Mickey.
  • In the Harambe Fruit Market, you can find another Hidden Mickey embedded in the concrete walkway.

Did You Know...?

  • Harambe is actually a Swahili word meaning “coming together”.
  • 13 Zulu craftsman from Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa, were brought in to make the thatched roofs located on the buildings throughout Africa.
  • The fictional village of Harambe is based on the ancient Kenyan town of Lamu. Harambe (so the legend goes) was once a hub for the gold and ivory trade, but is now a bustling tourist village.
  • The largest tree replanted in Disney’s Animal Kingdom (weighing in at 90 tons!) can be found right here in Africa.

Touring Tips

  • If you’re on your way to visit Kilimanjaro Safaris, Daka La Filimu is your last stop for film and batteries for your cameras!
  • Keep an ear out for the dizzying rhythms of the Congo as performed by the Tam Tam Drummers! They put on 15-minute shows throughout the day in the heart of Harambe village.
