The fun begins as you get to see view a new film, Perfect Picnic, in which Mickey and Minnie, accompanied by Pluto, are on their way to enjoy a cozy picnic in the country, a seemingly idyllic spot called Runnamuck Park (which should be the first clue that the day won’t pass as serenely as they would hope). They pass Goofy, who is serving as the conductor of a train, and of course Goofy, being Goofy, has a lapse in his attention to his duties. He inadvertently allows the train to go off on its own…and then the antics begin.

You’ll then board your very own Runnamuck Park train car – the very train that Goofy is steering – and set for five minutes of madcap adventures! Along the way you’ll see Mickey and Minnie gallop on horseback through a southwestern desert; enjoy glittering carnival rides; dodge a whirling tornado reminiscent of The Band Concert (the first color Mickey Mouse cartoon, released in 1935); cruise through a tropical island complete with an erupting volcano; tumble over river rapids opening into a waterfall, before plunging “under the sea”; drive through a busy city street (keep an eye out for Donald behind the wheel of a delivery truck); duck into Daisy Duck’s dance hall, (where you’ll enjoy a graceful waltz and a pulsating conga), witness a factory hard at work; and finally make a romantic return to Runnamuck Park!

This is the first Walt Disney World attraction (as opposed to a film or stage show) to star Mickey Mouse, and once your journey begins you’ll feel like you’re in a real-life Disney cartoon!

Keep an eye on the fireworks at the end of your journey. If you look carefully you just might spot some Hidden Mickeys!

Speaking of that iconic year, look for a nod to it within the attraction, as well as 1901, the year of Walt’s birth. In fact, the attraction is rife with references to other Disney favorites, including Fantasia, The Great Movie Ride, Walt’s partner Ub Iwerks, and Mickey’s predecessor, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit!

Did You Know...?

Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway puts Guests right in the middle of animated short films using a technique called 2½-D technology. Simply put, it is three-dimensional, but without the funky glasses. The attraction utilizes projection mapping, in which video imagery is projected onto three-dimensional objects, and when those images are moving, and the viewer – in this case, the Guest – is in motion as well, it makes for a very life-like effect; that is, life-like in the sense that the Guest is part of the action, as the images in the Runaway Railway are created to resemble the hand-drawn animated short films. In a sense, it is similar to Walt’s multiplane camera, except that this time the sets have multiple panels and screens, rather than the pictures themselves. Audio-Animatronic figures also add to the three-dimensional effect of the various scenes.
Another technological development incorporated into the new attraction is a trackless ride system. Runaway Railway is the second Walt Disney World attraction with this type of movement, the first being Rise of the Resistance. Unlike other attractions, trackless rides do not follow a set route. The vehicles, be they cars, boats, or whatever mode of transportation determined by the theme of the ride, follow each other in sequence on a pre-planned path. On a trackless ride, programming within the vehicle’s system and strong magnets in the ride’s floor propel the vehicles through the attraction. This means a few different things: first of all, no two experiences will be the same, so a Guest could ride the attraction multiple times throughout the day (though they may be spending a good part of their waking hours waiting in line for this high-demand attraction!) and have a different experience each time. The Vehicles can also move in a myriad of directions – backward, forward, side-to-side, in arcs and circles – as they are not bound to a set track. Guests may start the ride at the beginning of the train, but find themselves behind other cars as they progress through the story.
Disney tapped Christopher Willis, composer of the Disney Channel short films, as well as The Lion Guard, to create a catchy tune for the new attraction, “Nothing Can Stop Us Now,” crooned by Mickey at the beginning of the ride.

Touring Tips

Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway is sure to draw large crowds, not only because it’s a new attraction, but also because it’s the first attraction you encounter when arriving at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. FastPass+ is highly recommended!
