| Origins: |
It all started with
a trip to New Orleans.
While he was there, Walt
Disney acquired a little mechanical bird that fascinated
him. He experimented with the creation of other
tiny figures (the most famous of which was the
"Dancing Man", modeled after Buddy Ebsen, who incidentally
was the original choice to play the Tin Woodsman
in The Wizard of Oz!). Difficulties with the smaller
scale led Walt and his Imagineers to create full
size figures, culminating in the development of
Animatronics.
The Enchanted Tiki Room itself was, believe it
or not, originally conceived of
as a restaurant
with a large Animatronic
figure of Confucius as the focal point (it was
originally intended to be part of a Chinatown section
of Main Street which was never built). Remembering
the little bird he obtained in New Orleans, Walt
Disney soon modified the idea to incorporate a
variety
of tiki birds instead, and also dropped the "dinner"
component of the "dinner theater" concept. The
Enchanted Tiki Room was thus born and made its
Disneyland premiere in 1963. |
| Updates: |
During the 90s, it
was becoming evident that the Enchanted Tiki Room
was becoming somewhat dated. Ideas for a new attraction
were kicked around, but after some consideration
it was decided that the Tiki Room was too integral
to the Magic Kingdom's history to be removed.
Thus, the notion of updating the show was born,
and it didn't take long to realize that there were
two famous feathered friends who might be able
to lend a hand, er, wing. So in 1998, the Enchanted
Tiki Room (Under New Management) made it's debut,
with Iago (from Aladdin) and Zazu (from The
Lion King) adding new life, humor, and song to the classic
show. |
