Even though Space Mountain
didn't open until 1975, the idea for an indoor
roller coaster in the dark was conceived of by
Walt Disney in the late 1950s. Built during the
constant expansion of Tomorrowland in the 1970s,
Space Mountain became the first of the famed Disney
Mountains (the other two being Splash
Mountain and Big
Thunder Mountain Railroad). |
| Updates: |
In 1980 the original
ships with seat belt restraints were replaced
by newer rockets with upgraded lap
bar restraints.
In 1998, the rockets received a further upgrade
when a T-bar restraint system was introduced.
Space Mountain has changed sponsors over the years.
As they've changed, the theming of the exit walkway
has altered to reflect the new sponsor.
From 1975 to 1985, RCA was the sponsor (in partnership
with General Electric after 1984). During
that time the exit showed the Home of Future
Living featuring video baby monitors, large screen
projection televisions, video disc players, and
other modern day electronics.
From 1996 to 2004 Federal Express assumed sponsorship,
and the exit ramp was remodeled to include two
astronauts
with a package
floating in space, a robot figure and robot dog
with a package, and futuristic FedEx ads.
Since 2004, Space Mountain has had no sponsor and
some of the post-show scenes have been removed
(the robot dog is still there, however!) |
